The Burning Bridge (Ranger's Apprentice, 2) by John Flanagan, 2006. Published by Philomel.
Bracing for a final clash with the evil warlord Morgarath, the Rangers rally the kingdom's allies, and Will is chosen, along with his friend Horace, as special envoys to nearby Celtica. But the simple mission soon takes an unsettling turn - the Celticans have disappeared, their town abandoned. The scheming hand of Morgarath, it seems, has been far from idle. He has found a way to bring his legions over the once impassible eastern mountains and is planning to ambush the king's army in a rout. Now with help many miles away, Will and Horace are the only ones standing in the way of the dark lord's plans. They have shown great skill and courage in their training, but how will they fare in the face of true evil?
Why: I loved The Ranger's Apprentice so much that I cannot wait to start on the rest of the series. At this point I'm hoping to start putting the rest of the series on hold from my library. *keeps fingers crossed that they have all the books* You can see my thought on Ranger's Apprentice -> HERE.

Hollow Fields 1 by Madeleine Rosca, 2007. Published by Seven Seas.
Located on the outskirts of Nullsville and run by the insidious Engineers, Miss Weaver’s Academy for the Scientifically Gifted and Ethically Unfettered — also known as Hollow Fields — dedicates itself to raising the next generation of mad scientists and evil geniuses! Classes include Live Taxidermy, Cross-Species Body Part Trans-plantation, and Killer Robot Construction. For their own survival, students must master their lessons quickly...the student with the lowest grades at the end of each week is sent to the old windmill for detention—and so far, no child has ever returned.

Once thought to be a shoo-in for detention, recent transfer student Lucy Snow has come into her own at Hollow Fields thanks to Doctor Bleak—a mysterious box-like artifact that Lucy found in the library. Now with Doctor Bleak on her side, can the duo uncover the mysteries of the windmill and reveal the scope of Miss Weaver’s evil plans before its too late?
Why: Hollow Fields sounds like a slightly creepy, yet hilarious read. Plus the artwork looks interesting. :)
