Children's Book Review: Dewi and the Seeds of Doom

When Dewi is clobbered by a falling rat, the nosy Welsh dragon snoops his way into a challenging predicament. Helped by a toad with a passion for chemical wart cures, Dewi discovers that a megalomaniac baron is secretly breeding mutant corn at an unfriendly castle. To thwart the genetically modified-corn baron’s sickening plan, he must use moxie and firepower in a series of catastrophe-skirting capers.

First Sentence:

"Ouch!" Something hit Dewi's snout, bounced off, and flew over the rocks in front of him.

Dewi and the Seeds of Doom was definitely a cute read. I am using the term cute in my review because the book is aimed at children six years and up; thus making it a cute read for someone above that age range.

There are definitely many things to find enjoyable about Maggie Lyons' children's book, like, the fact that she did a great job of creating a character, Dewi, whose curiosity in all things led him on a adventure that would help him stop the plot of bad corn. Dewi was a charming dragon and his voice was well down within the book. I couldn't help but root for him as he sought to find out the mystery behind the odd corn and without getting his father involved.
While I doubt he had his father fooled in what he was really doing- come on, we all know our parents see everything-I enjoyed seeing him hunt down the clues and gather information on the Baron's nefarious plan to present to the sheriff. It was also interesting to see that he knew you couldn't just blame someone, but that you had to have the evidence to back up your claim.

Without a doubt, Maggie Lyons' writing and her ability to create a deftly written story about a young dragon and his quest to right a wrong is definitely what makes  Dewi and the Seeds of Doom worth checking out. I also think that it would be a great book for young readers transitioning from to chapter books, as the story and writing a really good.

In short, you could say the only drawback to this book, for me personally that is, is that it is definitely aimed at young readers. So, while it probably wouldn't be too much to the liking of anyone older than say ten, it is still an interesting read.

Final Verdict: Dewi and the Seeds of Doom- This is one delightful read that I would easily recommend to early readers looking for their first non-picture book. It has an interesting plot, characters and story-line that will draw young readers into Dewi's adventure.
