Growing up in Mississippi, he'd been trained from an early age to look out for them whenever he was near water at night. There were swamps and rivers everywhere in these woods. And those red eyes were unmistakable.  

 Good thing this wasn't one of those dog books. You know the ones I'm talking about... But here's an interesting quote from the book, one that showcases how well Hero and his boy worked together.
