[Blog Tour Review] Bride of Slug Man
After her huge success with her first feature-length movie, seventh-grader Kate Walden is eager to start on her next film, a sci-fi romance called Bride of Slug Man. When a new kid comes to town from New York City, Kate thinks she might have a new found film buddy-someone to share her interest with. And it doesn't hurt that he's pretty cute. But it turns out that Tristan is making his own movie, and now the classmates Kate thought were eager to join her cast and crew are divided.First Sentence:
With rumors spreading in school and between sets, Kate finds herself juggling more than just call times and rewrites. And judging from the whispers Kate hears about Tristan Kingsley,she suspects that he isn't interested in having a fellow film-buff friend; he just wants to prove himself as the best filmmaker in school by winning the Big Picture Film Festival. Kate vows to enter too, and tries to focus on just making the best movie she can.
But between the cutthroat popularity contest, a bully situation that goes from bad to worse, and several on-set mishaps, Kate is going to need all the movie magic she can get to make sure Bride of Slug Man hits the big-screen.
All the cafeteria lunches at Medford Junior High taste like they've been boiled in rusty cauldron, but the hot dogs are the worst.
Okay, so here's where I'll be painfully honest with y'all. I disliked Kate for pretty much the first half of Bride of Slug Man because of her attitude. Yet even though I had my issues early on with Kate, I came to really enjoy the book and her story-arc.
The first question to be answered is: What pulled me in to Kate Walden Directs: Bride of Slug Man. Well the short answer is Julie Mata's writing. But to stop there would leave this a very incomplete review, so... What I liked about her writing, and the overall story-line, would have to be the movie director aspect and how quickly things spiraled out of control as Kate jumped to conclusions regarding everyone's motives. Really, I liked the way the author wove more than just movie making into her book. I enjoyed seeing Kate and her friends stand up to the bullies and seeing her work through her angst against Tristan and his project.
Okay, so in the beginning I was pretty 'meh' about Kate because she was so, indecisive in what she was going to do, and, because she was unable to say no to her friends suggestions. While it took her some time to stand up for herself, and her friends, I ended up liking the slow progression from wishy-washy to believing in herself that she underwent.
Julie Mata's writing and the development of the story is what really made me like Bride of Slug Man- that and the craziness that goes into middle schoolers making a movie. I thought she did a great job of balancing out the highs and lows that goes into it, as well, as the (sometimes self inflicted) drama that was coursing throughout the book.
Kate Walden Directs: Bride of Slug Man shines with wit and humor as Kate, and friends, work to make her next movie while dealing with bullies and competition. Definitely a fun read worth checking out.
Final Verdict: Kate Walden Directs: Bride of Slug Man- From the writing to the character development, this book is a fascinating read. But let's not forget about Bride of Slug Man because that opened up so many fun angles to the story.
