[Blog Tour & Giveaway] YA Review: Three Day Summer

Three Day Summer by Sarvenaz Tash, May 19, 2015. 304 pages. Published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. Source: Blue Slip Media.
Michael is unsure about most things. Go to college? Enlist in the military? Break up with his girlfriend? All big question marks. He is living for the moment and all he wants is a few days at the biggest concert of the summer.

Cora lives in the town hosting the music festival. She's volunteering in the medical tent. She's like that, always the good girl. But there is something in the air at this concert and suddenly Cora finds herself wanting to push her own boundaries.

When Michael and Cora meet, sparks fly, hearts race, and all the things songs are written about come true. And all the while, three days of the most epic summer await them...
First Sentence:
"You. Are. A. Candy. Cane."

I'll be honest with you, I was not entirely sure that Three Day Summer would be a book that I would enjoy. I mean come on, we are talking about a book that takes place during Woodstock-can we say drugs and naked people.... Those two things are why I was somewhat leery of starting this one, yet, the way Sarvenaz Tash tells the story is so good.

Due to a very busy schedule, it took me three days to read all of Three Day Summer. Even though I was nervous going in due to some of what went/goes on at Woodstock behavior-wise, I am glad that I gave this book a chance because the writing was so good, and, the story/journey of Cora and Michael was exceptionally interesting to read about. Even though I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book, there were a few things that I, you know, did not like. But on a whole it was a pretty great read.

So, what did I not like about Three Day Summer, well, that would have to be that a) there was drug use (but again it was Woodstock and the 60s) b) there was some (not too much) swearing (but it did fit with the story, I just prefer no swearing) and c) well, let's just say there was some cheating going on.  While these three things are usually turn offs for me they fit with the book, and time period, so well that I decided to just go with it.

One of the things that really made me enjoy Three Day Summer would have to be the characters. I really enjoyed seeing both Cora and Michael learn not only who they are, but, also that they could chase their dreams and that of love. Seriously, though, I enjoyed the way Sarvenaz Tash moved them both through their individual struggles with past hurts and fear of chasing dreams. It was their stories amidst the craziness of Woodstock that really made the story so good.

Finally, I want to talk about the writing. As Three Day Summer was my first taste of Sarvenaz Tash's writing, I must say that I am quite excited to see what she'll do next as her writing really pulled me in. I loved how vivid she brought the time period, festival, and her characters to life. While both Cora and Michael were well written the rest of the cast, even though in the end their parts were small, were also well written.

Final Verdict: Three Day Summer- Music, love and new directions await Cora and Michael in Sarvenaz Tash's wonderful young adult book.

  2. Oh. I love the simple cover and when I read the synopsis, I was like, well, we all have that certain phase in our lives wherein we don't know what to do next or what will be our next step. Somehow, I can relate with Michael.
