Red River Stallion by Troon Harrison (my review):

Presently the roar of rapids filled our ears and, rounding a bend in the river, we saw their white boiling fury cascading down over grey rocks and sweeping to meet us in streams of bubbles and swirling knots of fast current.  Often, at rapids, I took Foxfire ashore to lighten the boat’s load, and often Orchid came too for some exercise or to find something to sketch.
