The Summer Invitation by Charlotte Silver:

I thought back to how she had said, " Why not try to place something of a value on yourself, Valentine?"-a question that I'd been thinking about ever since then and planned to bring up with my friends back in San Francisco.

Even though this is probably my favorite quote from The Summer Invitation, you should see why this one did not work for me.
