Angel Maker (True Grime, 2) by Natasha Deen (my review):

Turquiose threads, evidence of Loca and Echo's genius device, glittered in the strands of my black hair. Theoretically, I could use the filaments to my advantage, form the braid into a stick, rope, or vine. Only, I didn't know how to do this, and the idea of accidentally strangling myself to death seemed the kind of black-humor joke I should avoid. page 3
